Therapists for college students near San Diego State University
I believe therapy is a creative endeavor. Having a space to speak freely and be heard with care and attention can provide a person with more internal space for lived experience, emotion, thought and desire. In psychotherapy, you can express your thoughts and feelings and gain insight into some of the unconscious sources of your conflicts. I will provide an attentive ear and a thoughtful mind. Together we can create a collaborative space wherein you can bring your self more fully. My goal is to create a supportive and safe space for clients to talk openly and feel understood. I also believe it is important to help clients connect issues and learn to have compassion for themselves. Along with increasing self-awareness and symptom relief, one of the most important gifts that therapy offers is the hope and possibility for real growth and change.
As we move through life, we collect wounds that often never had the nourishment needed to heal properly. Our painful feelings hide deep inside, and we adapt in a variety of ways. Similar to how someone might go to a physical therapist for knee pain, only to find out that their knee pain exists because they hurt their hip years ago and compensated with misaligned posture, in life we experience psychological wounds that lead us to adapt our personality and behaviors in ways that are not aligned to who we actually are. In therapy, we listen to your thoughts and feelings and let them guide us toward the core parts of yourself that need healing. I provide a non-judgmental, grounded space where we can explore the ways you have adapted that are no longer working, welcome in the wounds that need healing, and allow you to become who you truly are.

I specialize in working with women and teens who have endured trauma. Trauma can cause you to feel stuck, hinder your relationships, and your ability to function in daily life activities. I want to help you change that. I will help you sort out the pieces, find healing, and find yourself again. I can also provide a faith based perspective to therapy if you desire that. Being a therapist and getting to hold space for people in their most broken moments is one of the greatest honors of my life. Every person’s story is one-of-a-kind, and that means your care should be too! When we team up, think of us as partners on this adventure together. I want you to feel heard, respected, and comfortable enough to share what's on your mind. I'll be here to listen, to nudge you out of your comfort zone when needed, and to cheer you on every step of the way. We’ll kick things off with an introductory session, where you get to tell your story and share what you’re hoping to achieve in therapy. Don’t worry – we’ll figure it out together! My goal is to create a cozy, welcoming space where you feel safe enough to open up, be vulnerable, and still feel grounded. After that, we'll roll up our sleeves and dive into making your goals a reality, one session at a time.

My name is Kimberley Durr, and I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I graduated from Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago, IL and am board certified. I evaluate and treat mental health disorders across the lifespan with medication and have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. I am most experienced in mood disorders, anxiety, ADHD, and schizophrenia but have experience in other neurodevelopmental, eating, substance use disorders. In my practice I approach each person individually and holistically. I incorporate his/her life's narrative and preferences when developing treatment plans and provide psychoeducation regarding my diagnostic impression. I offer a compassionate, gentle approach to patient care and provide guidance that is evidence based. I became a nurse simply because I like helping those in need. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to know I am making a difference in someone's life. I eventually found a position working in mental health and never looked back. I was a psychiatric nurse for a few years before pursuing my role as a nurse practitioner. This field can be challenging but rewarding, and I am determined to improve the lives of others. This first session involves getting to know each other and gathering history and collateral information when needed. I develop a case formulation, provide psychoeducation, and offer medication if appropriate. Sometimes labs are also ordered.

I truly enjoy helping people make improvements to their daily life by assisting them develop strategies to manage their struggles. When we meet for individual psychotherapy, we will work together to develop the best treatment plan for you in therapy with the goal in mind to be able to reduce the frequency of sessions as your symptoms improve. We will use brief assessment measures on a weekly basis in order to monitor our progress working together and we will continually adjust our agenda as needed to meet your needs. Assessment Services: You may be seeking an assessment in order to explain and/or better understand your, or your child/adolescents’ difficulties, provide diagnostic clarification, obtain recommendations for appropriate interventions, receive reasonable and appropriate academic and/or professional accommodations, and to learn practical ways to help you/your child/loved ones function better in daily life. A referring professional, such as a mental health clinician, physician/pediatrician, or learning specialist, may be recommending that you obtain this evaluation. An assessment involves an in-depth clinical interview, school observation (when warranted), collateral contacts, review of records, administration of standardized tests, a comprehensive report, a detailed feedback session, as well as additional feedback to referring providers as needed. I then incorporate this knowledge with my expertise in interpreting the test data produced from our in-depth evaluation. I love working collaboratively with my clients to find a plan for mental wellness that is tailored to the individual. Each case presents a unique set of circumstances that cannot be fit into a one size fits all approach. While my primary area of expertise is on medication management, I do incorporate some holistic practices into my treatment plans. In addition to medication management, I use CBT, DBT, and Family Systems Therapy in my therapeutic approach. I typically work with clients with an array of mental health concerns ranging from depression and anxiety to bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. I have additional training in perinatal mental health and enjoy working with birthing persons in planning for pregnancy as well as managing mood symptoms during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.
