Who I am as a psychologist is deeply tied to who I am as a person. I am a cis Black man. I am heterosexual. I am from rural Arkansas. I was raised in low-income family. I’m first generation. My background taught me the value of community and resourcefulness. These are the things that shape how I see the world and how I serve in this role. I help my clients create sustainable change by working with them to combine knowledge and skills into purposeful action. A cornerstone of my approach involves "me-search". I believe self-knowledge is essential to insight (our ability to identify, understand, and take steps toward our goals). My goal is offering a brave and empowering space to facilitate that transformation. I look forward to helping you explore how your concerns relate to you, your body, social world, and worldview. My ideal clients are folks who are curious, open to ask themselves really hard questions, and have a willingness to approach change in an honest way. I ideally like to work with clients navigating a life transition (academic, work, identity or relationship based), anxiety, and/or healing from traumatic experience. Overall, I enjoy work that’s depth-based and clients who are interested in therapy that focuses the source and solutions. I draw on my clinical-research expertise exploring meaning in life and liberation to approach healing as an integrative process. I believe there is great value in establishing a brave and affirming therapeutic relationship and space to identify, make sense of, and take action to work toward my client’s goals. Overall, I consider myself a “fellow traveler” and practice from a strength-based approach where I invite collaboration, courage, and trust in the process from those with whom I work.

Hello, I am Dr. Calvin Young. I am a Veteran of the United States’ Army where I was trained as a special forces medic. As a mental health clinician my training includes credentials a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology; with a minor in Psychology. I hold a Master of Sciences degree in Human Services Administration; along with a Master of Science degree in Counseling. That credential was earned with an emphasis in Addiction Treatment and Psychometrics [clinical psychology core]. My academic training and credential includes as well, a Master of Arts degree in Human and Organizational Development. I completed most of the dissertation process to be awarded a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Human and Organizational Development and I am the holder of an earned doctorate (PhD) in psychology. I have been nationally(USA) -qualified as a Forensic Assessment and Substance Abuse counseling professional. With over two decades of experience in the field of applied social and behavioral sciences under my (expanding) belt. I have treated patients in inpatient, residential, hospital, and out-patient settings on an Individual basis; or as a part of a therapeutic Treatment Team. My experiences include treating couples, addressing family issues, dealing with organization’s psychological needs-and working as a mental health provider to stakeholders in the Legal Justice system as an Expert Witness in matters related to mental health, addiction and the Law. My forensic work has taken place in the United States, Canada and in the Caribbean (Jamaica). My clinical experiences include work with juvenile and adult substance abusers and sex offenders. And I have treated victims and perpetrators of violence. I have well over a decade of experiences as a contracted provider of clinical mental health and substance abuse treatment. I have been employed at several universities as a professor of Counseling, Psychology, and Sociology, among other related discipline areas. I am an experienced educator, who has taught at the secondary (High School), tertiary and graduate levels. I have trained and conducted seminars and workshops with professional and lay audiences for multiple topics in mental health and addictions. My treatment philosophy is shaped by an acceptance that the successful psychotherapeutic alliance, clients are best assisted with accomplishing the goals identified in therapy through and in a manner that –as much as possible- integrates and involves spiritual systems (church, temple, mosque, etc.), local communities, other social services organization, along with businesses, school districts, and even legislators as the most effective and beneficial manner of moving clients forward in order to achieve and maintain changed behaviors. My overall philosophy of care is eclectic as I do not think it is appropriate to place human beings in a box. I incorporate a wellness model in my psychotherapeutic work utilizing an integrative approach that incorporates the best of conventional and alternative medicine (CAM) into my treatment plan with my clients as as I understand that if the physiological is not considered and addressed, then the psychological and psychiatric will be poorly or at best only partially healed.

At The Kedzie Center, we aim to provide a safe space, by providing confidential and empathic care. Within this frame, therapy is guided by the initial concern that prompted the individual or family to seek treatment. Areas of concern may include emotional distress, relationship issues, work or employment stress, grief and loss, major life transitions, adjustment issues, behavior problems, acculturative stress, and exposure to trauma, abuse or violence. Therapy can be brief in nature, allowing for an exploration and resolution of the presenting concern. Treatment can also be long-term, with a greater focus on seeking to understand the internal and interpersonal dynamics at play in one’s life. How therapy is structured and scheduled is part of the ongoing collaboration between therapist and client. Based on an initial assessment, recommendations are made for individual, family and group therapy for children, adolescents and adults. Services are available in both English and Spanish at this time.
My ideal clients are queer, neurodivergent folks with a history of trauma. They may struggle with self-acceptance, navigating relationships, or managing emotional overwhelm. Their needs include validation, trauma-informed care, coping strategies, and support in embracing their unique identities. Their goals are healing, reclaiming their power, and building a sense of community. They want to feel empowered, seen, and safe—so they can live authentically, cultivate self-trust, and thrive despite the challenges they face in a world that often marginalizes them. I specialize in EMDR, somatic therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients process trauma, regulate emotions, and heal from past wounds. Using these modalities, I guide clients in reconnecting with their bodies, integrating fragmented parts of themselves, and fostering self-compassion to create lasting emotional transformation. I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate trauma, identity, and emotional struggles on your own. You deserve a space where you’re seen, heard, and supported. Together, we can explore healing through trauma-informed techniques like EMDR, somatic work, and IFS. You don’t have to do this alone—I'm here to support you when you're ready.
The past few years have been incredibly difficult for everyone, regardless of background or finances. In my practice I strive to create a warm and welcoming space where we can curiously and compassionately explore your concerns. I genuinely believe that you are the expert in your own life, and my goal is to assist you with discovering and deciding how to live your best life. Throughout the pandemic I was specializing in working with people struggling with depression, anxiety, substance use, isolation, interpersonal conflict, and grief. I have extensive history working with the college-aged population from my doctoral internship at Illinois State University and Spalding University’s counseling centers. I also have experience working in higher levels of care with non-college aged adults at outpatient, residential, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and inpatient levels of care. While working together we’ll collaboratively explore areas where you may feel stuck and discuss the use of new, more adaptive coping skills to help you move in the direction of your goals. I have many years of experience teaching classes focusing on evidence-based treatments, such as: DBT, ACT, and CBT. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Faraz is passionate about both discovery and the practice of psychiatry. He trained at Rice University as an undergraduate and moved to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he was part of the Medical Scientist Training Program, culminating in an M.D. and Ph.D. in Neurobiology. His academic interests include molecular and behavioral neuroscience, computational sciences, and translational psychiatry. Faraz’s strategies are patient-specific and motivated by quantitative evidence derived from high-quality studies. Still, as an investigator, he understands psychiatry is a rapidly evolving field, and it is the goal of translational scientists to fill the gaps in our knowledge. Faraz consistently uses his best clinical judgment, combining facts and theory to care for his patients. Faraz is a strong proponent of multimodal approaches to patient care. He endorses the appropriate use of pharmacology, therapy in a variety of settings, and novel and long-standing somatic tools. He strives for efficient deployment of evidence-based evaluation and treatment algorithms but simultaneously has a low threshold for questioning generic approaches, especially when treatment is less effective than expected. Statement on ADHD management: Neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD are diagnosed and treated in relation to comprehensive clinical judgment. Diagnosis may require multiple avenues including psychiatric evaluation, review of past psychological and related records, medical workup, cognitive testing, and collateral information gathering. Collectively, diagnosis may take up to several months, especially in individuals looking to be initially evaluated for ADHD. Additionally, patients with a prior diagnosis or corresponding medication treatment history of ADHD should not assume this will be carried forward automatically. As in all aspects of psychiatric care, thorough assessment and clinical judgment will guide recommendations. Schedule your session easily through our online booking link. Therapy is not about “fixing” yourself. It is about making space to understand yourself, and developing compassion for the parts of you that feel confusing, painful, or hard to face. Healing begins when we stop running from ourselves and start acknowledging what has been asking for our attention. I offer a therapeutic space that is warm, curious, and non-judgmental. I work with adults navigating depression, anxiety, identity exploration, family and relationship dynamics, and more. I am passionate about supporting the LGBTQ+ community, those struggling with strained or painful relationships, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of themselves. I invite those who feel their experiences are not always affirmed by the world around them to explore what it means to feel seen, find clarity, and build self-trust.
We provide individual, couples, and family therapy and will co-create therapy goals with you. In addition to understanding your experiences from your cultural lens, we are also conscious of the impact of sociocultural dynamics, historical trauma as well as current and past political systems on your life. We recognize that it is not uncommon to be trapped in narratives and roles from your past. If this is the case, we will help you identify contributors to the “stuckness”, and guide you in recreating your narrative, keeping in mind your values and aspirations, to help you feel the authentic version of yourself. During the course of therapy, in addition to exploring and helping you recreate your story on your terms, we will also assist you in identifying a repertoire of skills and tools that make you feel more connected and make daily life more meaningful. We specialize in serving immigrants, South Asian, and Middle Eastern communities. Please see our specialization page for more information.

My approach is rooted in trauma-informed, attachment-based and anti-oppression frameworks. I rely on a supportive and collaborative process in setting and working toward your goals. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, but it shouldn’t have to. I believe in meeting people wherever they are in their journey and working together to build a path toward wellness. My goal is for you to feel empowered, supported and worthy of positive change. Feel free to contact me to set up an initial appointment so we can start to explore your goals.
