In my private practice, I work with high school, college, and graduate/professional students. I enjoy working with high-achieving students of all genders, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I am also pleased to see those those who strive to achieve but are facing barriers to academic or personal success. This includes students who are on leave from college for medical, personal, or financial reasons. Because I also consult to schools and colleges, I am very effective at helping students and families navigate educational institutions.

I'm a psychologist with 20+ years helping college students with eating disorders and body image problems. I like to work collaboratively. I bring the expertise on how to help students recover from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and emotional eating ( as well as the anxiety and depression that often accompany these issues) but students are the experts on their lives. Together, we form a partnership to help you move forward in both your eating disorder recovery and in building a life with more balance and joy! I utilize a mix of empirically-supported therapeutic approaches including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

College can feel like a mix of excitement and pressure all at once. Between academics, relationships, figuring out who you are, and trying to keep up with everything, it’s really easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or like you’re just barely holding it together. In therapy, I try to create a space where you don’t have to have it all figured out. We slow things down, make sense of what’s going on, and work together to find ways to feel more grounded and more like yourself again. I really believe people already have strengths in them, even if it doesn’t feel accessible in the moment. My job is to help you reconnect with those strengths and figure out how to use them in real life, especially during stressful or confusing seasons. I work with college students and adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship stress, trauma, and big life transitions. I use approaches like CBT, mindfulness, and body-based (somatic) work to help you understand what you’re feeling and actually shift it in a practical, supportive way. My fee for a 50-minute session is $180. I also offer a limited number of sliding scale spots ($90–$100) to help make therapy more accessible.

My style is collaborative, thoughtful, and supportive - offering space to understand your inner world while moving toward meaningful change in how you relate to yourself and others. I place a strong emphasis on building a supportive, trusting therapeutic relationship, believing that meaningful growth starts with feeling truly seen and understood. My approach is integrative & client-centered, drawing from evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, Narrative Therapy, & Solution-Focused Therapy to tailor our work to your unique goals. Together, we’ll explore practical tools & deeper insights to help you better understand yourself, move beyond self-limiting patterns, & navigate challenges that may be getting in the way of your goals. Dr. Tara Cousineau is a licensed clinical psychologist with nearly 30 years of experience supporting high-achieving individuals who struggle with perfectionism, self-doubt, procrastination, imposter syndrome, and burnout. Her clients are often high achieving individuals who are outwardly successful but inwardly overwhelmed—neglecting their own well-being in the pursuit of achievement. She offers a warm, collaborative space to reconnect with what truly matters and build a life of greater ease and meaning. Dr. Tara’s approach is integrative and holistic, blending mindfulness, self-compassion, psychodynamic and narrative therapies, Internal Family Systems, and mind-body medicine. She believes every person possesses innate strengths that may be hidden by life’s pressures, losses, or traumas—and that therapy is a process of remembering wholeness, even when things feel messy or uncertain. In addition to private practice, Dr. Tara serves part-time as a staff psychologist at Harvard University’s Counseling and Mental Health Services (and as such cannot see currently registered Harvard students in her private practice due to conflict of interest). She maintains a small caseload of 8–10 clients at a time in order to provide personalized care. She especially enjoys working with clients who are motivated to grow between sessions and who seek to align their inner lives with their outer aspirations. Dr. Tara sees clients in person on Friday afternoons in Newton Highlands, MA, and offers telehealth appointments on Monday and Thursday afternoons. She has advanced training in Internal Family Systems, integrated care through the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, and teaching certifications in Mindfulness Meditation and Mindful Self-Compassion. She is the author of "The Perfectionist’s Dilemma: Learn the Art of Self-Compassion and Become a Happy Achiever" and "The Kindness Cure: How the Science of Compassion Can Heal Your Heart and Your World," which reflect her deep commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care.

Despite years of self work and therapy, is something still not right? Can you feel it in your body that your nervous system is not functioning in the way that you need? Working together I can help reacquaint yourself with your body and it's signals, learn how to listen to it's cues, care for the nervous system and whole self. We can discover the root of your suffering and find ways through it, so you feel more calm and more engaged. We may also use EMDR to reprocess traumatic experiences. EMDR helps facilitate conditions that allow your body and brain's natural ability to heal to prevail. Do you feel like others in the world are suffering more than you, that you shouldn’t ask for more? I will help you work through these doubts and hesitations to discover how you can truly live a life that is aligned with who you are, guilt-free. It's possible for you to live more in the present and feel empowered in your life. Our work will help you feel more connected to yourself, the people in your life and the world around you. You will better understand your life experiences, stresses and anxieties to learn to live with all parts of who you are in better harmony.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over ten years of experience. My areas of specialty include: depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, conflicts around cultural identity, life transitions, and academic and career struggles. I am particularly interested in helping clients who face conflicts around their race, culture, and identity. This may include first and second-generation immigrants who have the challenge of straddling multiple cultures and finding their authentic voice. I work pragmatically and collaboratively with clients to achieve their goals. I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL where I received the Walter Burke Award in Clinical Excellence and a Distinction of Honors on my Ph.D. Comprehensive Qualifying Paper. At Northwestern, I trained in psychodynamic and dialectical behavioral therapy and published several research papers on juvenile detainees and violence in persons with severe mental illness in peer-reviewed journals. I completed my internship at the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, NY where I treated adolescents, families, and adults in outpatient clinics, a Psychiatric Emergency Room, and on an adult inpatient unit. Afterward, I worked as an individual and group psychotherapist and clinical supervisor at the counseling center at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY. At Fordham, I was also the outreach coordinator in which I regularly interacted with marginalized students on campus. In addition to working as a psychotherapist, I worked at the Harvard Business School assisting with the organizational psychology course, “Authentic Leadership Development.”
