Christie Garbarino is a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides diagnostic evaluations, psychopharmacological management, and individual psychotherapy. Christie has worked for over fifteen years in a variety of psychiatric environments, including a community mental health center, a dual diagnosis inpatient unit, private group practice, and a college counseling center. She enjoys working with adults of all ages who present with a diversity of psychiatric needs. Christie maintains a treatment philosophy that is holistic in nature, placing emphasis on assessing and treating the entire person. She believes that combining both medication and psychotherapy often leads to the most successful outcomes. She uses both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral theories in her work with clients, and she sees the formation of a strong therapeutic alliance as essential. PVD Psychological Associates (PVD Psych) is a private psychology practice on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island. Our mission is to provide the greater Rhode Island area with exceptional therapy, offering cutting edge and research-supported treatment by a team of highly trained therapists. We offer therapy for adults, college students, and adolescents struggling with anxiety, school/career concerns, eating disorders, infertility and women's health issues, and relationship difficulties. PVD Psych is a LGBTQIA-affirmative practice, and is one of few Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island LGBTQ Safe Zone certified providers. We strongly believe that everyone has the right to respectful and affirming, high quality care. My areas of specialization and interest include: women's issues, depression, anxiety, stress management, and working with LGBTQIA-identified individuals and family members. I practice primarily from a relational-dynamic perspective, though I also incorporate techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and narrative approaches to address and tailor treatment to the unique and individual needs of each client. In my work as a therapist, I focus on understanding early experiences and how psychological well-being can be fostered through relationships. I believe change and healing come through relationships: our relationships with ourselves, as well as our relationships with others. I view therapy as a collaborative process that allows both therapist and client to grow and change. My clients describe me as an empathetic, active listener who approaches their concerns with caring, respect, pragmatism, and sometimes, humor. I'm honored that you're considering working with me and I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have. Please feel free to contact me.

I am a warm, straightforward therapist focused on providing effective treatment. I work to connect genuinely with each of my patients because I believe the first component of effective treatment is the formation of a trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship. With this relationship as the foundation, we can then collaboratively determine your goals and take measurable steps to achieving the change you want in your life. I specialize in the treatment of adolescents and young adults struggling with depression, sexual and gender identity, suicidality, emotion regulation, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship problems, family issues, academic and occupational stress, and life transitions. I specialize in Dialectical and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These approaches seek to provide practical skills to manage the emotions and thoughts that are interfering with our lives. I have also trained in trauma based and exposure protocols. In addition, I have specific training in supporting those who identify as gender non-conforming and offer both assessment and supportive counseling to individuals and families. I appreciate the courage it takes to talk with a therapist. Therapy is a very active process, with both the client and the therapist putting in considerable effort, and I will work with you to create the treatment environment that best meets your individual needs.
Life can be incredibly stressful and lonely, at times, especially during the college years. I believe in the ability of therapy to help people heal and change. Often, this process starts when we feel at our lowest—lost and overwhelmed. An experienced therapist, I provide a warm, compassionate space to talk about the things that matter to you, explore what might be holding you back, and create a plan together to make the changes you desire. People say I put them at ease and quickly bring a new perspective to the way they have been thinking about a problem. I have a holistic, individualized approach—weaving together therapeutic interventions tailored to your unique needs. It would be an honor to help you navigate a difficult challenge or circumstance.
Anxiety and depression can make college feel overwhelming—constant worry, overthinking, feeling on edge, sudden waves of panic, or getting stuck in “what if” thoughts and mental loops. For some students, it also shows up as perfectionism, needing things to feel just right, or feeling driven to overanalyze, check, or mentally replay situations. For others, they get stuck and can't make decisions, start tasks, and quickly fall behind. My work with students is practical, goal-focused, and skills-based. Together, we focus on tools you can actually use in daily life—learning how to step out of worry and mental loops, tolerate uncertainty and distress, understand and name emotions, and respond more flexibly when strong, uncomfortable emotions show up. We’ll also look at how your emotions influence your choices, habits, and relationships, and work toward changes that help you move forward. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety or other uncomfortable emotions completely, but to help emotions to have less control over your thoughts, decisions, and day-to-day life so you can feel more present and grounded. My focus is on individual therapy for anxiety, social anxiety, panic, OCD, adjustment issues, depression and trauma focused therapy for PTSD.
