A lot of people say they knew at a young age they would be a therapist, but that wasn’t me. I grew up in a military family and thought I would continue that tradition and be a stay-at-home mom. Instead, I found myself in a journalism career and a marriage I didn’t like. Starting over after 30, I chose to return to school and pursue a degree in social work. Since then, I’ve worked with the military, in inpatient facilities, and in outpatient care. I love working with women who find themselves “outside the box” when it comes to societal expectations (child-free/childless, unmarried, or just a-plain-ol’ rebel). I love to focus on resiliency, self-improvement/self-esteem, personal growth, and even a bit of spirituality (if that's your thing). I'm a very laid-back, nontraditional therapist. I believe you are the expert in your own life and, sometimes, we just need some guidance or permission to do the things we know we need to do. I don't assign homework cause, frankly, I wouldn't do it if I were in your shoes, but I will suggest some tasks or actions that may be something to focus on between sessions. I also expect clients to show up with a discussion topic or something to start us off with; again, the time is yours to use as you feel best. I have very eclectic interests. Two things that are very important to me are spirituality and non-traditional relationships. I feel both have their own challenges and prejudices to overcome. I'm always looking for ways to include and incorporate my client's spiritual beliefs (if they choose to share) into sessions and help them build a strong foundation. Nontraditional relationships (including kink dynamics) can be a challenge to bring to therapy as there's often a perceived level of judgment—not here! I celebrate however your relationship looks and work to help you create the most nurturing and healthy relationship however that looks. One of my core values is curiosity, so I love it when I get to learn a little something from my clients. Having grown up in a military family that moved every three years like clockwork, learning about people and cultures has been a huge part of my life. I encourage my clients to practice showing and embodying their authenticity with me so they may go out into the world more confidently. I believe we all have something beautiful to share and learn from each other and I encourage those I work with to explore that on a deeper level.

I work at Southeast Psych, a private group practice located in the South Park area of Charlotte, NC. I collaborate with adults and emerging adults (age 15+) to help identify meaningful goals, increase self-awareness, and process challenging thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Many of the clients I work with are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief/bereavement, life transitions, difficulty establishing boundaries, or challenges in coping with emotions. My approach to therapy places emphasis on the relationship between client and therapist; allowing the client to guide sessions in the direction that is most relevant and meaningful. In addition, I utilize techniques and skills drawn from Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT), in order to tailor session to the uniqueness of the client and their life experiences. If you feel we may be a good fit for each other or have any questions, please reach out.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice. I work mainly through insight-oriented psychotherapy, but I also offer diagnostic evaluations and prescribing services. Patients see me for a variety of concerns around self-esteem, trauma, attachment, dependency, boundaries, self-criticism, and childhood abuse/neglect. These issues may lead to shame, guilt, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, perfectionism, self-loathing, or repeated conflicts with family, colleagues, or romantic partners. Therapy is a chance to think carefully together about your past and present experiences to deepen your insight into your situation. As we come to understand your inner world, I hope you will gradually notice a greater sense of flexibility, freedom, and openness to life's many joys and challenges. As a psychiatrist, I am happy to help with diagnostic clarification and medical treatment of most general psychiatric conditions including mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and others. While medications alone often fail to address the deeper conflicts and traumas that cause our symptoms, a thoughtful approach to prescribing can help build a foundation for the personal work that leads to lasting change. I have special experience working with university students and early career professionals in medicine, academia, law, tech, and the arts. I enjoy working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and I welcome and affirm those who may identify as LGBTQIA+ or neurodivergent.
People I work with often are starting out in therapy or interested in moving towards trauma work. If you're interested in learning how to slow it down, use mindfulness, or feel more connected to your body, I utilize narrative and somatic techniques to help people reclaim their peace, energy, and rest. As an Asian-Mexican-American psychotherapist, I enjoy helping people learn more about connecting to ancestry, spirituality, community healing and peer support resources that remind us we are all connected. When I'm not doing therapy I love going to the beach, writing, camping/hiking/backpacking, and traveling.

In the session, Courtney's goal is to provide a warm and nurturing environment where clients can begin to approach issues or situations with curiosity, work to find insight, and create sustainable solutions to life struggles. Courtney believes strongly in providing copious amounts of empathy and gentle pushing towards cultivating more compassion for yourself. At her core, she is a person-centered therapist and her space reflects that. She will be authentic and genuine in session and hopes her clients feel safe doing the same. She always considers the biopsychosocial model when treating mental health concerns and utilizes techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance, and commitment therapy, and shares an understanding of polyvagal theory with clients. Courtney received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she also pursued a certificate in play therapy. Over the past decade, she has spent time working in public and private schools and within families to support the healthy growth and development of children and family systems. Because of this, Courtney specializes in working with children and parents. She enjoys empowering parents through positive parenting skills and utilizes play therapy to address childhood mental health struggles. She is also certified to hold Child-Parent Relationship Therapy classes, which brings the skills of play therapy into the hands of the parent and into their home. Additionally, Courtney is extremely passionate about being a neurodivergent affirming therapist for all ages and enjoys examining systems or "rules" that exist but don't serve the individual. She also enjoys working with adults on getting in touch with their playful side - whether that be playing with sand or fidgets while in session, or working to create space in their lives for hobbies outside of session. In her counseling sessions, Courtney enthusiastically listens to her clients and believes an equal and collaborative relationship to be crucial in eliciting change. She believes that every individual holds the power within themselves to work through life’s turbulence and upset. Her role is to help her clients uncover this power while also working to acquire the skills and strategies that will aid them in achieving their goals. The sacred nature of therapy is not lost on Courtney, and she holds the relationship highly. She is honored to be part of someone's life journey. One of Courtney’s favorite quotes comes from Mr. Fred Rogers, “There is no normal life that is free of pain. The very wrestling with our problems can be the impetus for our growth.”
I specialize in working with men, women, teenagers, and boys (6+). If this is you, it is my goal to help you overcome the barriers and problems in your life that are keeping you from experiencing the freedom you are desiring. Often times, these problems are the result of trauma from childhood that is still unresolved. Difficulties that we experience early in life often stay with us into adulthood, creating a a myriad of problems including depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction (sexual, drug/alcohol, work), sexual abuse, lack of self confidence, relationship issues, negative coping habits, physical or auto-immune disorders, & more. In my practice, I utilize a number of trauma informed approaches such as Attachment Focused EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help you resolve these early childhood traumas. I believe you can overcome these barriers to experience more peace, joy, and freedom in your life. You can heal. And it would be an honor for me to assist you on this journey. Send me a message for a free 20 minute consultation. (I am not working with insurance right now). See more at www.taylorhouchens.com
