Hello, my name is Adam Nash and I am a counselor who works in a private practice called Health for Life. I am a trauma informed counselor who works with men in their late teens and early 20's. I believe that college is one of the hardest times of anyone's life and I believe that having someone to support you through these difficult times is very important. I have a desire to work with college students as the move through this time of transition.
Transition to college can be tough, even for the most prepared students. We love working with young adults on the issues of college adjustment, anxiety/perfectionism, depression, social issues and many other challenges. We offer in-person services in our Bloomfield Hills location or teletherapy from your own room (in bunny slippers, if you prefer!)
I've spent many years working in different college counseling centers and have a true love for the college population - so much is happening in emerging adulthood, especially figuring out who you are and what you want life to look like. Because of increased stress and responsibilities, it is also a time where mental health concerns can either emerge for the first time or increase in their severity. I find great joy in getting to be a supportive space and teammate for folks navigating this incredibly rich period of life.
I don’t look like what I have been through, and you don’t have to, either. There are times in our lives when we can’t see past our grief, trauma, passion, or desires. There is no shame in talking things out with a professional trained to help. We all walk a different path, but talking to someone can sometimes help us see the forest, not just the trees. My goal is to assist you in establishing healthy boundaries across various areas of your life, enhancing self-awareness, and embracing uncomfortable emotions like guilt and shame. I promote self-love and compassion, improve communication skills, and encourage you to face your fears and uncertainties.
Coming into counseling is an indication that there are aspects in you life that you want to change. We all desire to live our best life and having someone who provides unconditional acceptance, honesty and support can help you in reaching those goal. An effective counseling relationship will allow you to increase your self knowledge, gain an awarness of the patterns in your lives, and learn strategies that move you towards your best life. Meaningful counseling addresses your emergent situation and long term issues. My substantial background as a professional in crisis intervention, emergency safety planning, and my deep knowledge of community resources helps me to respond to your immediate concern. My in depth long term counseling skills allow me assist you at any stage of your life. My internship at the MSU Psychiatric and Counseling Center has prepared me to handle a wide variety of student-centered concerns and meet the challenges of significant change and stress. To support you as a client, I adhere to a person-centered counseling philosophy. You are the expert on your life and goals, and I act as your guide. As my client you will determine the goals to be achieved. I will use only those techniques and strategies that are evidenced-proven to aid you in reaching those goals. Starting counseling can be a overwhelming and scary experience. I recognize that and strive to always provide you a safe and accepting place to grow.
People often struggle with feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emotional responses they do not understand. Counseling can be very helpful in identifying the source of these symptoms and undoing negative effects of previous life events. . I find great fulfillment in helping individuals to gain a better understanding of who they are at their core as well as how past events and circumstances have affected them in order to move towards genuine healing. One of the most important aspects of therapy that I am committed to is creating a safe space for all individuals. Therefore, I operate from a very open-minded standpoint and I am accustomed to addressing issues relevant among diverse populations. I have had the privilege of working with individuals of various ethnic backgrounds, faiths and spiritual orientations, gender identities, and sexual orientations. All are appreciated for their unique backgrounds and personal qualities and all are welcome!

I work with variety of clients, but most of my clients come to me for help with relationship issues -- significant other, friend, family and work relationships. College students often come to me with issues related to roommates, gaining independence from parents, anxiety related to overwhelming school work, career choices and figuring out who they are. College years can be an amazing time of growth and opportunity, but they can also be incredibly stressful. I love to help college students navigate and find their ways through the many twists and turns of college life. I believe that each person has the wisdom and knowledge within them to be able to heal and grow themselves but that intuition can be difficult to access due to our upbringings, beliefs, structural expectations, etc. I am honored to join with clients on their growth journey and provide perspective and safety along the way. I welcome clients from all walks of life and work primarily with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self exploration, and navigating the many transitions of life. I take an eclectic approach that utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Psychedelic Integration and also value the wisdom and significance of spirituality, mindfulness, somatics, ancestral connection, connection with nature and other non western conceptualizations of growth and healing. I foster a inclusive, nonjudgmental and affirming approach that does not shy away from difficult emotions. This is a collaborative relationship where we work together and rely on your inner wisdom to pursue growth at a pace that is healthy for you. If this resonates with you, I look forward to connecting with you and exploring the work we can do together.
