Many of the people I see are creative, thoughtful, and maybe a little unsure of where they’re headed next. Whether you’re dealing with relationship stress, an existential “what am I doing with my life?” moment, or just trying to communicate better, therapy can be a space to slow down and figure things out together.
Clients who come to me have expressed feeling a change in their mood, such as feeling more irritable, more anxious than usual or that they just don't feel like themselves and aren't enjoying things that they once used to. I will provide you with a non-judgmental and accepting environment where you can feel comfortable talking openly about difficult emotions and topics. Since each person is a unique individual with his or her own experiences, I use a holistic approach to therapy that’s unique to who you are and what you will need to support your well-being. In therapy we will explore connections between your past and present experiences so you can gain a deeper sense of awareness about yourself, identify problems so you can get to the bottom of why you are feeling the way you area and learn coping skills so you can better manage symptoms and find relief in challenging moments. Mental health concerns that I specialize in but are not limited to include: anxiety, depression and trauma, as well as family dynamics, life transitions, career-related stress and self-esteem. We’re told all sorts of misinformed messages that downplay the importance of mental health, so it’s no surprise if you are hesitant or nervous about the idea of therapy but remember that you are entitled to get help, no matter what you are going through.
Creating a space for someone to feel supported and heard is my first priority. The most important aspect of a therapeutic relationship is the dynamic between client and therapist. When you truly feel comfortable and understood by your therapist then that is when therapy can thrive. The goal in the work we do is to focus on assisting you in healing so that you are able to use the space and time we have to decipher what would work best for you to move forward. Therapy is a place for you to unwind, unload and have an opportunity to speak your thoughts out loud, reflect and make sense of how you would like to proceed away from stress, anxiety, anger, melancholy or behaviors that are no longer useful and yet challenging to change. I have worked in the field of HIV, substance use and mental health for over a decade. Primarily working in community health centers and non profit organizations, I have had the honor of providing mental health services to homeless men and women, adults who are actively using substances and unsure of what changes they would like to make, if any, and with homeless youth who are struggling with a severe mental illness. My graduate education and training was started and completed in the Bay Area where I also taught mindfulness meditation through a research study at UCSF. I am a Latino Bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing in the state of New York. I specialize in working with people, in both English and Spanish, who are struggling with Substance Use, Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Sexual Identity, Coming out, Gender Identity & Transition, HIV-related issues, Relationship issues, Grief and Loss, Sexual Difficulties, Migration issues and adapting to a new country with a sensitivity to diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with expertise in treating trauma, anxiety, substance use problems, and insomnia. I also work with people experiencing life transitions, academic stress, grief, relationship difficulties, and health-related stress. I love working with students and young adults. I have extensive experience working with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, gender, and sexual identities, and I am committed to providing affirming, anti-oppressive care for all clients. No two individuals are the same, so I work with each client to understand their goals and needs for treatment. I provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with integration of other evidence-based methods, such as mindfulness, values, and emotion-focused work. If appropriate to your needs, I can offer specialized types of therapy, including Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, CBT for Insomnia, CBT for Substance Use Disorders, and exposure therapy for anxiety disorders. I take my work very seriously, which means that I strive to take myself very much not-seriously. Some sessions, you may need to cry. Some sessions you may need to laugh. I hold a Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from University of Pennsylvania, which I obtained with a focus on positive sexuality and living your best sexual self. I hold a Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Education (EdM) in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University, which I earned with a heavy emphasis on applying a social justice and multicultural lens to therapy. While at Columbia, I also received an Advanced Certificate in Sexuality, Women, and Gender with my focus on LGBTQQIA and open/polyamorous clients in therapy.

I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.
