Therapists for college students near Duke University
Noah Goldstein MD
I am a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice. I work mainly through insight-oriented psychotherapy, but I also offer diagnostic evaluations and prescribing services. Patients see me for a variety of concerns around self-esteem, trauma, attachment, dependency, boundaries, self-criticism, and childhood abuse/neglect. These issues may lead to shame, guilt, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, perfectionism, self-loathing, or repeated conflicts with family, colleagues, or romantic partners. Therapy is a chance to think carefully together about your past and present experiences to deepen your insight into your situation. As we come to understand your inner world, I hope you will gradually notice a greater sense of flexibility, freedom, and openness to life's many joys and challenges. As a psychiatrist, I am happy to help with diagnostic clarification and medical treatment of most general psychiatric conditions including mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and others. While medications alone often fail to address the deeper conflicts and traumas that cause our symptoms, a thoughtful approach to prescribing can help build a foundation for the personal work that leads to lasting change. I have special experience working with university students and early career professionals in medicine, academia, law, tech, and the arts. I enjoy working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and I welcome and affirm those who may identify as LGBTQIA+ or neurodivergent.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate, certified Personal Trainer, Nutritional Coach, Mental Toughness Coach, Group Fitness Instructor, and Weight Loss Coach. I am also a PhD candidate at Capella University in Counselor Education and Supervision. I specialize in the combination of Mental Health and physical wellness through Nutritional Counseling and Physical Fitness for a holistic approach to wellness. My experience in the wellness field began with personal training and nutritional coaching in 2001 by helping clients achieve their goals with motivational and goal oriented programs while simultaneously helping them overcome personal obstacles. While working as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, I obtained my Life Coaching certificate and focused on helping clients achieve a healthy mindset and relationship with food focusing on nutrition and life balance. My combined treatment plan of Whole Health Wellness looks at the mind-body connection to understand why we have physical consequences such as chronic disease when we are not balanced nutritionally, physically, or have an unhealthy outlook on life. My research and experience with eating disorders has led to the whole health wellness perspective and approach to a holistic view of healthcare and wellness. I have continued to work in the field of nutrition, weight management, and mental health to date (19 years) and am excited to continue my journey in the PhD program. In practicum and internship during my masters, I worked at both a neurocounseling and biofeedback office and in a private practice setting with individuals, groups, couples, and families providing services for adolescents and adults. Areas of therapy include behavioral difficulties, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive/compulsiveness, trauma, relationships, family difficulties, eating disorders, infertility, and sex counseling.

Immediate telehealth evening appts. You're tired. You have to carry BIG emotions all the damn time with no outlet to let them out. You may cry when you’re alone, but put on a smile so the world can’t see you're hurting on the inside. There is no time to slow down because slowing down makes the inner critic grow louder about how awful you are. Perhaps you get some release through eating or other coping methods, but ultimately, that voice comes right back again. The inner critic makes it hard for you to accept yourself and love your flaws. It makes it hard for you to live your life intentionally, with confidence in yourself to use your voice. Everyone deserves to live a life they're excited to wake up to. Therapy helps with this. It allows you to show up and be your authentic self while healing that inner critic who causes trauma and shame. You don't have to save face. The journey may be tough. However, taking a step allows you to get closer to the resiliency you seek and break the cycle. If anything above resonates with you, I see you. I look forward to helping you become the best version of yourself. All you have to do is show up and I'll walk the beaten path with you. Just call or schedule at (www.ashleyhoseycounseling.com). I'm an OON provider but ask about superbills and other payment options.

Creating a therapeutic relationship is vital to fostering a space of mental healing, and I strive to make that with my clients. Peaty Counseling and Consulting, PLLC
I believe that all people are capable of change and have the internal capacity to shift unhealthy patterns in their lives. Sometimes, we need a little help because we get "stuck" in old patterns that have been well honed through past hurts or traumatic events and cannot seem to find a new path forward. This is not through a lack of desire of wanting it to be different, but due to the impact that these difficult and painful life events have had on the part of our brain that controls how we react to these stressors. When we experience deep pain-- through relationships, situations, or trauma--these experiences are stored deeply in the subcortical area of the brain. This pain remains there, unprocessed, and can cause disruptions in day to day life. This can look like over-reactions to noise/stress due to growing up in a chaotic environment, difficulty asserting yourself with heart palpitations and chest tightness due to that "bad boss" that berated you, stomach pain every time you drive by your ex's neighborhood despite the fact that you have not dated in years, or overwhelming grief each year when the anniversary of a significant loss occurs. While traditional talk therapy can be helpful, it is not able to access the deeper, subcortical areas of the brain. I utilize Brainspotting as a therapeutic technique, to support the brain's self scanning and self-healing capacity. Brainspotting enables you to access these stored experiences and integrate them in a more functional way. By utilizing an eye position relevant to the issue you are wanting to address, and a "felt sense" of this issue in the body, deep brain processing is able to occur. This bypasses the conscious, "thinking" part of the brain, and leads to lasting change. I also utilize a blend of other approaches including cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, directive and non-directive play therapy and draw from attachment based and neuroscience supported interventions in my work. Lisa Peaty received her Masters in Social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has over 20 years of clinical social work experience, working with children, adults, and families and has spent the past 15 years practicing as a therapist in the Winston-Salem community. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, baking, exercising and reading.

I am a PSYPACT certified licensed psychologist and can meet with clients in 42 states for teletherapy - As of December 2025, I will also be offering in-person appointments in Raleigh on Thursdays (9 am-2 pm) and Fridays (9 am-5 pm). In-network with Aetna and BCBS. You may be reaching out for support at this time because you’re feeling stuck. When meeting with my clients for the first time and discussing what brings them to therapy, most share that they have tried everything that they can think of to address their concern. Perhaps they’re used to being able to “figure it out” independently but the current issue feels insurmountable. My approach to therapy is walking alongside you as you explore different parts of yourself, better understand your thoughts and emotions, reflect on where long-standing patterns may have come from, and move towards actions that align with your values. While you are the expert of your own experience, you don’t have to go through this alone. I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, disordered eating/body image, perfectionism, trauma and resilience with close attention to and incorporation of your intersecting identities. I have almost 10 years of experience providing counseling services to adults and young adults. Specifically, I was the embedded psychologist for the Emory School of Medicine, where I worked primarily with medical students. I have a deep understanding of the ways academic stress impacts young adults, particularly in their longing for a sense of control and the impact of work stressors on relationships. I use research supported approaches to address client concerns, while leaning into our therapeutic relationship by building a safe and collaborative environment. I strive to find balance between exploration and empowering you to leave each session with tangible skills and strategies that can help you meet your goals and maintain changes over time. It would be an honor for me to walk alongside you as we explore parts of yourself and trust that we can make meaningful changes together.
